J.Crew family promotes McDonald's in Bangalore

On the subject of jarring images (which I wrote about in my last blog entry, Sondia Gandhi worshipped) I went to the McDonald's on Cunningham Road in Bangalore. Cunningham Road is a road like Brigade Road becoming "upscale" with international stores and coffee shops. The only images in the swank McDonald's were four-foot high images of the family below:

All I could think was "Huh?"

In the middle of South India is this image of a white well-to-do couple (from the U.S.?) with their children, dressed in expensive clothes from a J.Crew-like catalog. They are wearing sweaters dressed for Fall, so they are somewhere cold.

Is this what Indians aspire to? Or only what McDonald's wants them to aspire to?

They may be able to buy the sweaters, but they are going to have a hard time getting their skin so pale. (Although there are skin whiteners for sale in India if they wish to try.)

As a visitor, this is so jarring to me. I see all of these beautiful people here in Bangalore wearing these rich colorful clothes. What a strange image for McDonald's to post in their store.
