Ladakh is Tibet without Chinese repression

Ladakh can be thought of as Tibet without Chinese repression. Ladakh is at the wesern edge of the Tibetan plateau, so the landscape is similar - high plains and mountain desert. Many of the people are ethnically Tibetan, and Tibetan Buddhism is practiced widely. It was an independent kingdom until the mid-1800s when the British began to administrate it. Now the Indian military guards the northern and eastern borders from China in Tibet and the western edges from Pakistan.
