places

Stories and impressions about the places I've been.

Note: I am a traveller and not a journalist. I do not have the resources to fact-check while travelling. These stories are a record of my observations, impressions, and opinions.

"You can get it in India"

Submitted by itinerant on Sat, 06/03/2006 - 8:16am.

When I arrived in Mumbai, I still had a number of items to get. I had been running around before I left the U.S. in a mild panic for all of the things I had not gotten. I was running out of time.

Delhi

Delhi surprises me

Submitted by itinerant on Mon, 05/22/2006 - 4:25am.

I arrived in Delhi on a "Deluxe A/C Volvo" bus via the road from Jaipur. It is marked as a highway on the map. What this meant in actuality is a very wide concrete highway with a divider down the middle.

Himachal Pradesh

Dam! Dams! in Himachal Pradesh

Submitted by itinerant on Tue, 08/01/2006 - 1:16am.

Himachal Pradesh is being ruined by dams and hydroelectric projects. Somewhere in the halls of the Indian government bureaucracy there must exist a map of how to dam every meter of surging water in Himachal Pradesh and turn them into a chain of placated pools.

Manali

My first impression of Manali

Submitted by itinerant on Sat, 06/03/2006 - 8:16am.

Manali feels like a strong contrast to my travels in the plains and desert further south in India. Manali is set in the Himalaya mountains. There is a convergence of ethnicities here. The contrast is stark in such a small place. There are people of Tibetan, Nepalese, and Aryan background.

Uttaranchal

By hook and by crook, I cross the Nepal border

Submitted by itinerant on Sun, 07/30/2006 - 8:44am.

On Friday afternoon I go to the Kashmere Gate ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminal) in Delhi to find out how I can get to the Nepal border. I had been dreading trying to go to the border to renew my visa because I know it would not be easy. Now I will find out if my fears are justified.
