Staying at Hotel Northgate in Madurai - decent with good food
I am going to the hospital twice a day for more IV antibiotics. Today is the last day. Boy, it sure seems like I am taking a lot of drugs.
I am going in the morning and the evening. In between, I am taking it pretty easy. After the antibiotics are done I may actually see the tourist sites in Madurai.
I am staying at the Hotel Northgate. It is far from the center of town where the strip of hotels in the Lonely Planet are. It is about 550 rupees plus tax a night, or about $14, for a "single" (a double at a single price), non-AC room. It is the same price as the Hotel Rathna Residency. But the service and quality of the rooms are better here. I chose it because it is close to Apollo Hospital. But I suppose it could work for a tourist, but you would have to take an auto-rickshaw to Sri Meenakshi temple, which is a couple of kilometers away.
The hotel has a restaurant that serves a buffet for breakfast and lunch - almost all South Indian food, very tasty, and a bargain at sixty or seventy rupees. The mid-range hotels seem to be a good deal for food in Madurai. The dishes are reasonably priced and most of the hotels have a rooftop restaurant from which you can see Madurai.
Right outside the hotel is a busy street, but there is an internet cafe, the BSNL telephone office, a pastry shop, and other shops to get food. It is across the street from the "American College".
