Last Saturday I visited Bangalore Palace. When I arrived I found a tribute to the good old days of colonial Britain.
The palace is a complete departure Indian architecture. It is sort of an architecture of what someone thinks a castle ought to look like. Even though it was built at the end of the nineteenth century, it looks like something from medieval times.
Inside are photos of the pastimes of Indian royalty: motorcars, dance balls, golf, and hunting.

In one side room the guide showed us a collection of pedestal made from elephant feet sitting in rows.
Bangalore has vestiges of the British Empire evident in the buildings, street names, and racecourse in the center of town. But it is growing so fast that in the areas surrounding the center the brand-new India is being built.
